Drawn to Food
Experience what you eat with all five senses! — A sketching & illustration class.
“Drawn to Food” is a great way to learn easy techniques on how to take accurate field notes, recreate travel details, or just have fun drawing the wonders of nature (and food!) around you. We will explore the artistic possibilities of tomatoes, kiwi, grapes, and other amazing bits of the natural world (bones, leaves, flower details). As part of the Five Senses experience we will taste some of what we draw and discover what, if any, sounds our subjects make.
Refreshments will be provided. 21 and older only.
May 24th 2017 6pm–9pm
Limited to 15 participants
$45 each – tickets are available online, or call 406.926.2720
Our instructor, Bethann Garramon Merkle, will give you her pro tips to expand your appreciation of the natural environment. She is an UM EVST graduate and an award-winning artist and science communicator who has taught art-science integration for over a decade. She has taught all ages, worked with science educators, researchers, and biologists-in-training, while her work has been published in several science-related periodicals.
Bethann’s website CommNatural.com and her facebook page both provide examples of great illustrations and advice on how to produce great results yourself.
This workshop will focus on sketching and illustration methods that involve watercolor, watercolor pencils, pen and ink, and graphite techniques. You are welcome to bring whatever materials you like, but instruction will focus on the previously mentioned media.
The following is a list of materials we recommend you bring with you*.
- Sketchbook (watercolor paper or mixed-media paper recommenede
- Permanent ink pen (Sharpie fine tip is recommended)
- Watercolor pencils in red, yellow, and blue (water soluble, easier to use than watercolor pigments if you are new to the medium)
- Watercolor brush
- 2H drawing pencil
- Art gum eraser
- Transparency film
- Wet-erase marker
- Water cup
- Brush-dabbing cloth
- Large resealable plastic bag (to keep everything organized and dry!)
Sketching is an inherently light-weight affair and these items are intentionally minimal in size. If you already have larger supplies, feel free to bring those.
* We have a limited number of Sketch Kits available for sale, which you can order online and pick up at the class. Please order by midnight 5/17.
I a late enrollee in the Drawn to Food class and wonder what is meant by transparency film and wet erase marker? I’m a watercolorist and have lots of supplies but these terms are unfamiliar. I have WC pencils but haven’t used them much. Thanks
I checked with our instructor, and neither of these are essential to the class, but she says they are handy things to have. Wet-erase markers are water-based and used on white-boards, and transparency film is the stuff you use for overhead projectors (maybe that should be past tense?). We have some wet-erase markers here that you can use for the class, if you’d like. Hope this helps.
